1998 v70awd or xc70 awd not working

Post by ehazel88 »

So i picked up my barn find xc 70 (free), So far I have the head off and out getting machined and going back together this weekend. When i picked the car up loading it on the trailer it wouldn't go up, just spinning the front tires. I have not looked at anything to do with this. If someone knows enough about it could you be so kind to give me the quick run down as to everything to check, even if there is a fuse for it i would like to know about it. I am a mechanic by trade, but i lost touch with volvos since they stopped the 850. I don't know much about the awd system, but have all the skills to test sensors and whatever comes my way.

Thank you in advance,
Evan

I guess I'm not sure exactly sure what is happening, what the symptoms are. I think you are saying that the car simply spun the front wheels and the back wheels are locked up. This is certainly possible if the prop shaft ( drive shaft) has been removed and the parking brakes are locked up. I guess it could also be a severely damaged angle gear (transfer case) that has the rear wheels locked up. The latter would likely also result in a lot of transmission noise as the front wheels are turning.

There really aren't any controls for the AWD beyond those of the standard transmission. The AWD is full time and there aren't any controls to engage or disengage it. Since it is full time AWD it is imperative that it never be towed on anything but a flatbed. Towing it on a dolly will cream the angle gear or the viscous coupler, or both.

I got mine at a junk yard but I need to ship it off to Colorado Drive Shafts for a rebuild. I think I paid around $80.00 for it even in the bad shape it is in. On a '98 be sure to check your chassis number, there are two versions of the shaft.

The chassis number is usually the last digits of the VIN but the product plate that is on the inner fender on the left hand side of the car has it for sure. The product plate is, more or less, just above the battery.

Before you jump to order a new propeller shaft, make sure the bevel gear (transfer case) is still there. The shaft was probably removed for a reason - to circumvent a failed AWD system. With luck, the previous owner removed the shaft because the centre bearing failed and not because of a failed bevel gear or viscous coupling.

Everything thing seems to work good with the car up on the lift and the output shaft going rearward moves as well.
