96 850 GLT Home made tools

Post by joe_pinehill »

I made a couple tools today.

First an idler wrench. Picked up a piece of 1 inch piece of 3/4 bar stock, and 18 inch piece of 3/4 x 1/4. Welded the the bar to the end, ground it a little to fit. Works fine, as good as the online for $29.

Second, made a Cam gear locking tool. I started with card board, and pressed it into the two cam gears, enough to leave an impression. Then pushed nails through where it looked right. Test fitted the cardboard/nails and looked ok. Next transferred the holes to a block of wood and drilled. Next I inserted the nails. Test fitted, and the four nails messed into the cam gears. I had a piece of scrap aluminum, so i transferred those holes, drilled 1/8 for the cut off nails, and JB welded the nails to the aluminum. Works fine. Its a knock off of the online tool available. I could have stopped with the wood version, it looks like it would work as well as the aluminum, but I had the scrap metal, and the time on a rainy day.

Nice work. Please polish them smooth, power coat them and I'll send you $20 for the pair.

Just kidding. I have no welding skills or equipment.

Nice tools! I admire the idler pulley wrench especially. I'll have to post up a picture of the "tool" I made using a scrap of square aluminum bar, a wrench and some duct tape. Mine's not as nice as yours! :)

No welding needed. Just a trip to your local hardware store.
