'92 240 Alternator /regulator test?

Post by niel9533 »

I replaced the brushes/regulator in my 240's alternator since the brushes were shot (normal symptoms, wacky dash lights, dimming headlights, windows barely moving...). After a full charge I went on my merry way and about a week later I had the same symptoms of a bad alternator/shot brushes... Checked the battery charge & it was barely 12v. Upon starting the car cold I could see that it was not charging. However, if I rev the engine significantly - click - charging (checking w/volt meter ~14v @ the battery)! So I did some driving to warm things up & killed the engine & restarted - charging as it should. But allowing the engine to cool and trying again I have the same issue - no charge @ cold start. Could this be a bad regulator in the part I just bought? Is there a way to test it? Thanks.
