99 Volvo S70 Ignition switch wiring harness apart

I was trying to replace my ignition switch (left side of steering wheel) and I foolishly removed the plastic cover from the wiring harness connector that plugs into the switch.

In so doing all the wires fell out of the plastic connector holes and I don't know which holes they went into. So I'm stuck with no start until I find the right holes to put the 6 wire leads into.

I tried, to no avail, to find a wiring diagram that could help me - I was able to find a picture of the empty holes (unused) on the connector. I also found a listing of colored wires going to specific connector holes for a 98 S70 that has 8 different wires (6 of which are the same color as the 99 ignition switch.

needless to say I would really appreciate it if someone could help me identify which colored wires go in which connector holes so I can reattach the harness connector to the new ignition switch and drive again (without all my instrument lights, radio, and wipers turning off on me!)

If you search for my v70 1999 ignition switch thread, I'm pretty sure I had some close ups showing the wire codes...

thanks Mikealder - I will try to match the 6 wires I have to the harness illustrated in the wiring diagram that has 7 wires... crossing fingers!

but really thanks so much for providing that - it is now on my computer in a safe place!

mikealder - thanks! It is starting now and all ignition switch functions are working fine! (as far as I can tell so far!)

the diagram had a couple of different wires than were on my car's ignition switch wiring harness but 5 of the 6 wired up just as your diagram showed - I took a reasonable guess as to the remaining wire not shown on the diagram and voila - starts right up!

Anyone trying to replace their ignition switch (electric switch part of ignition switch NOT tumbler) should learn from my example - just pry the harness off of the switch, replace the switch and press the harness back on to the newly mounted switch!

If you take the plastic cover (which snaps over the wire connectors holding them in place) off you will most likely end up with a confusing mess and take 17 times longer to finish the job than it has to be.

Hey guys, so sorry to necro an old thread but I too was an idiot and removed the black cover cap and now have a bundle of wires and no clue where they go.

I can tell from the old ignition switch the 3 pins that DONT have a wire connected to them but no idea which color wire matches which hole label.

The wiring diagram link is dead.

EDIT: I found this. Going to try it when the new switch gets here

There is a chassis break and ignition switch change in the 1999 model year, so make sure you have the right part number and diagram!!
