2001 Volvo S60 Ignition coil fell apart Topic is solved

I took out the ignition coil, in order to try and take out the spark plug, but when I took it out it some things fell out of it. It seemed to fall apart

The rubber was Intact but there was a spring and a small cylinder fuse looking thing that stayed at the bottom.
I’m guessing that is what goes from the wiring into the spark plug

I don’t know how it’s supposed to go back in. I tried putting it back together but now my car started to misfire.

Does this mean my ignition coils don’t work anymore since they fell apart. Or did I just not put them back together the right way.
(I couldn’t find any videos on this and all the other videos I saw the ignition coil came out in one piece.)

It is fine to replace 18-19 years old coil pack. Bosch 0221604008 is under $45 on Amazon.

You can get a used ign coil at local junk yard for $10.
Or ebay has them for similar prices ($10-$15).

New is about $55.

Use only reputable brand such as Bosch or Volvo OEM.

If you can post a photo, I can see if I can help you. I may have a few coils in my garage (used Volvo coils).

Just read your post again, you may be able to salvage the coil.

Look at a good coil and see how the spring fits, you can put it back the same way.

I just had this exact same experience on the 01 V70XC I just bought for my mother in law. It had failed, & was one of the no-name/part # coils you always see on eBay/Amazon for a really great price. Rubber boot stayed (partially) attached to the plug, the rest ripped away & then once out the spring & small cylindrical shaped metal thing fell out.

I had an old garbage OEM Bosch Slovenian coil on hand, so I disassembled them & compared them side by side. The difference in quality is very convincing. This why I always recommend using OEM/Bosch coils. Whether they are new or used off eBay, always run Bosch. It is very tempting, I am not immune to this, but DO NOT mess around & waste your money and time with the aftermarket stuff that will give you headaches sooner than later.

You can tell the aftermarket junk by the top of the coil. The shiny epoxy should have some numbers on it & also will likely say “Slovenia” (or some EU country) on it. I’d be willing to bet there is neither of these on the top of your fried coil. Sorry this happened, but you will get used to it. The tops of these engines run hot, & encapsulating the ignition coils under plastic just expedites their death. You’re not hurting much with it limping along on 4 cylinders. Just get a healthy coil in there as soon as possible, you’ll be fine.

It doesn’t have anything on top acctaully it’s just black.
I’ll try getting a new coil in there ASAP
They are a bit expensive would it be okay to just put 1 in there?

Buy two, replace the bad one, and when the next one goes you can replace it right away and order your next spare. An oil filter added will make your order free shipping with a lot of vendors, too.

That’s what I do when I have a coil go dead - just replace the bad one. For me it’s usually cylinder #5 (furthest to the drivers side). I’ve also had #1 and #3 go dead. Make extra sure there are no wires that can get pinched putting your plastic covers back on.

Like Abscate said, just make sure you always have at least one spare. If spark plugs haven’t been done in the last 80-100k I’d put a set of those in when you do the replacement coil.

My engine has 210k miles and I have never replaced a single coil. I clean the contact pad, the valve cover and torque the bolt with the right spec every time the coil pack is removed.

My my how times have changed.

The dawn of catalytic converters and the "High Energy" ignition systems that accompanied them had everyone trembling over the specter of a miss burning out a cat.

Just thought I'd mention it.

You better jump on fixing a miss.
