Hello and need a little advice

Post by Lex »

Just like to say HELLO and looking forward to talking with you all.
I have been given a 94,850,2.0,20valve Volvo for really nothing and it is not in bad nick considering its 185000 miles,my old 940 is getting a little long in the tooth and this would be a great upgrade for me .
The only problem is it wont start,i have had the plugs out and a good spark is there ,i have also had the fuel rack out and it appears to be getting plenty of fuel, but start it will not .
The car was running and peetered out after a journey of 15 miles or so never to start again...
It points to no compression but it wont even attempt to fire up {im getting a compression tester asap},i just wondered if anybody knew of any silly things it could be ,there are no faults on the ecu readout either but i heard that if the maf sensor went down it wont register a fault anyway !!!.
Hope somebody can shed some light ,thanks in advance for any info  Alex
Ps would it not try to fire if fuel delivery pressure was low ? and ive just been told that the crankcase breather system was very recently cleaned out and replaced with new inlet gasket .Thanks again
I have just done a compression test
No1 was160psi
No2 was140psi
No3 was160psi
No4 was145psi
No5 was160psi
This was done on a stone cold motor, hope springs eternal

Hey great news to be given a 'new' car..

Typical no start problem for the multivalve volvo. It turns over but no start.

Okay, I am not sure compression readings are the way to go, as the valves stick open and compression is reduced so much it won't start. The plugs foul up and your stuck.

Take out the plugs, let them dry, put a drop of oil down the cylinder bores, replace the plugs. Now turn it over with you right foot planted to the floor.

It will take 30 seconds or so until it kicks in but should start.

Failing this then there is fuel issue (another 850 problem) I would star be jumpering ther fuel relay.

Good luck
Matt

Hi Matt

Thanks for that mate i will give it a go tomorrow and let you know the results,is it worth putting the plugs in the oven "old school style".

I kept tinkering through the afternoon ,had a look at the fuel pump which seems ok but when you turn ignition on it pumps for about 6 secs then cuts out if you turn the ignition straight on and off again it still runs the same time,is this a fuel pressure regulator fault i.e. fuel passing straight through the system and not gaining enough pressure for a good injection or do they all do it ???

I also put the pressure out of the pump on a seperate pipe to make sure it was doing its job and all was well.

Thanks again for the advice and hopefully have it up and running soon... :D

where are you relieving the pressure on the unit? from the fuel rail?

Have you checked your fuel relays?

Did you try keeping the spark plugs on the engine block and firing it up to see if there is any spark?

Has the fuel filter been changed?

Get under the hood and pull the computer codes first off just to see if anything obvious has failed.

no start conditions have several causes.

A cold engine will have lower than normal compression so I think yours is ok
The fuel pump only makes a noise for a few seconds when you put the key in . There is always pressure in a fuel injected system, If you take off the cover over the throttle you'll see a schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail. Push it in and see if there is pressure in it. Gas will spray out so have a rag there.
I kind of think you may need a cam position sensor, That will cause a no start condition and those seems to fail. There should be a code though for it. Did you pull all codes. Emissions and fuel?

Hi CarVolvo,
Fuel relays are ok its 103 on my motor, spark plugs give a crakin blue spark, but i dont think the fuel filter has been changed....on fyrther investigation of my manuals i have the Bosch 3.2 jet tronic system which has 2 ecu ,i only pulled the codes off the fuel one so my problem lies in my ignition ecu or sensors.
Thx for all the help and will keep you posted off progress...Cheers Lex

Hi Bobsnow100 im pretty sure my fuel pressure is ok ,im taking it from valve on fuel rack but as my replys to earlier posts you all got me wondering about the codes again and hey presto i have two ecu on my systen and i havent pulled the codes from my ignition ecu ,so that is on my list for tomorrow and with any luck there could be some light at the end of the tunnel.

I will keep you all posted of my progress and thanks for all the info ,come round my local for a cold one on me when you are in town.Cheers Lex :D

Do you know if the car has sat for awhile with old gas in it? If so, drain and put fresh gas in as well as changing the fuel filter (which you mention) as it is also suspect. It could be clogging up after you drove a few miles. Other things have been mentioned. I would not bake the plugs. I would probably try brand new Bosch copper or Champion copper plugs designed for your car. Gap them at 0.028 inches. Good luck.
