fuel rail pressure sensor/fuel pressure regulator
2004 s60 with 71000 miles. car stalls or almost stalls. car stalled completely once during takeoff but usually just almost stalls during moderate driving. service engine light has been on since this began. had the codes read and they are p0089, fuel pressure regulator and p0194, fuel rail pressure sensor. i don't see a regulator anywhere. are these two the same thing? do you think that the frpt sensor would correct the problem. it's kind of expensive to guess. would appreciate any help. thanks.

No one can guess 100% right without the car being scanned with equipment that can show the FPS supplied pressure and a fuel pressure gauged hooked up to show the actual pressure. The person doing the readings also needs to understand the electronic readout is in absolute pressure which is 14.5 psi/100kPa/1Bar higher than the gauge pressure at seal level.
The history of the FPS part is such that the FPS is the part most likely causing those codes and those symptoms you list.

thanks for the info. the sensor is just so expensive i hate to guess. i'll put a pressure gauge on it and see what happens. it's getting worse. it just stalled at takeoff and i didn't know if it was going to restart.

jimmy57 I replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor and it did the trick. When I called Volvo they called it a pressure regulator. I got a Bosch replacement from Autopartswarehouse.com for $162.50. Volvo & AutohausAZ wanted $204 for the same thing. Many thanks for the help.

I have a 2004 s60-R which has the same problem. I just learned that Volvo did a recall to change the fuel pressure sensor!!! you can find the recall at http://www.lemonauto.com/complaints/volvo/s60.htm ... I am in latin america so i don´t know if it applies but it should... I looked for it in autopartswarehouse.com and found it ... just in case the dealer says no!!
Hello every one, if you were to search on internet, for the recalls on your volvo car you will see that this issue is one of the recalls, the dealer will fix this problem for free, search for volvo recalls. Good luck.

There are several different threads on the FPS going out so I'll just post on this one. I experienced the FPS related hesitation and eventually got the high pressure code. I removed the connector, slid off the red moisture barrier, sprayed some good contact cleaner on the connector and plug and plugged/unplugged several times to wipe the contacts. Couple more sprays and cycles. Dried it off. Put the red soft seal back on, clipped it together and have not had a problem for a week. Since this is a sample of one, if someone else w/ the symptoms would try it we might reveal a faster fix.

Having these same issues as others. Stalling, hesitation dying. After reading some of the post, which I appreciate all the help, I purchased a fuel pressure regulator from ebay. Part# FPS518. This part is compatible with a lot of Volvo vehicles. Here is my issue now. After putting the new fuel regulator on, the car started great. Idles great too. I took it for a test drive. Just normal driving around town and it did perfect, then I went out of town and tested the acceleration. Well I thought it was fixed, upon a rather hard acceleration in began to stall and sounded like backfiring in the engine. Very similar symptoms as before changing the regulator but this time it doesn't die after letting the rpm go back to an idle. Cleared the codes before the drive and when the started the hesitation again the codes were p0087 and p0089 low fuel rail pressure. Could I have gotten a faulty regulator. Purchased from amautoparts on ebay for $59. It was a Bosch but local auto parts sell it for over $200. Thought I was getting a good deal. Any suggestions?
