Volvo 2001 V70 T5 Evap system code

Post by phoffman »

My check engine light is on again due to small evap emissions code. My Volvo mechanic used the smoke test last year and replaced one of the rear hoses and I replaced the gas cap. He was not able to find any other leaks running the test. What is a common failure point in this system?
Thank.

What kind of gas cap did you install? I haven't had the absolute best of luck with the aftermarket offerings from the local auto parts store. Usually they're OK, but occasionally they're...... eh....... so-so.

Take a good look at the rubber O-ring seal on the cap. Is it dry and cracking? Maybe try smearing some vasoline on the seal and see if you get a temporary fix.

Also, there is supposedly a known problem area in the venting system back by the filler neck. Maybe that's the hose your mechanic replaced?? I believe it involves minor surgery to get to it, like removing the inner fender liner or something like that.

You can just buy the gasket too - http://www.ipdusa.com/products/8818/120 ... s-cap-seal . When mine went I actually bought an aftermarket cap at NAPA that used the same gasket & switched it over which worked fine (was cheaper & quicker than buying gasket separately).

Mechanic replaced one more hose at rear of car - still NG. I am going to drop off car next week for him to do smoke test again.
Any ideas?
