2004 xc90 rear brake engaged once brake is appl

Friends I need help. I have an xc90 T6 AWD volvo. I have observed that the rear brakes engages all the time. I went to a local garage and the pad on the rear driver side was taken out. Then, tested the brake function to ensure that the brake fliud return was ok and that the caliper responds as required without the pads in. Once the pads were reinstalled, I applied brake once and it engaged but remained so. This causes the disc to be excessively hot if driven. I have stoped driving because of this issue. Please I need help.please.

Are you sure that the problem is not with your emergency hand brake as opposed to the disks and callipers.
I assume from your description above that the callipers were assessed at the garage as functioning correctly and are not sticking at all?
The e- brake has brake shoes (similar to traditonal drum brakes) housed within the rear rotors which can jam up and bind at times. You should check the handbrake cables and adjustment etc is correct.
The build up of road dust or dust from the brake linings themselves is often the cause of the problem if it is that?
In extreme cases the linings delaminate from the steel shoes themselves.

If parking brake is eliminated as cause then get brake to bind up and then loosen the bleeder screw on the sticking brake and see if any brake fluid comes out and then the rotor can be turned easily. The hose to caliper can fail and trap fluid in caliper and make it stay applied on one wheel only

He said, the brakes get stuck once he's depressing the brake pedal. I assume he didn't touch to the handbrake therefore the handbrake shoes are not at fault.

The most probably either the caliper pins are seized or the caliper cylinder is seized. Otherwise, I would suspect a faulty master cylinder or faulty ABS sensor.

Here's a good question: do both rear wheels get stuck?

Thanks all for your candid help. I got the caliper serviced in a local garage and this took away the problem. The calipre cylinders were not returning once brake was activated. Cylinders are free now, just have to replace the pads. Thanks a million times for the inputs made.

Good to know it was an easy fix. Probably the brake fluid wasn't changed in a while.
