It could be clogging up after you drove a few miles. Other things have been mentioned. I would not bake the plugs. I would probably try brand new Bosch copper or Champion copper plugs designed for your car. Gap them at 0.028 inches. Good luck.

The car was only stood for about 4 months after it stopped, but i will drain it off tomorrow and get some fresh juice in their and also try to get hold of some plugs as i was planning on a service for it anyway including the fuel filter.
Thanks for the advice....Lex :D

Hi all
The smiles and anticipation of a running Volvo have dissapeared folks  ,went out this morning and pulled the codes for the ignition ecu fully excpecting to find at least one fault ,not one flashed up.

I took Matts sugestion and pulled the plugs got a bit of oil down the bores and popped the plugs back in after a clean, fired it over with foot to the floor,it started to fire ,not much but enough to give hope ,i repeated the operation and it nearly came on all five ,after this attempt i stuck my head under the bonnet only to see water been forced out of the expansion tank ,on removing the top it was also clearly unburnt white smoke coming out as well, then to top it off i think the rad has split because there was water running down the engine side of the rad.
This could have been the original fault i suppose ,but anyway it looks like im towing it to work some time so i can have a tinker at night or should i say take the head off and have a look :x .

Do they suffer from cracked heads often or is there somethings to look out for when the head is off,i will be getting it pressure tested and skimmmed to be safe also.

So there you go but as they say "ONWARDS AND UPWARDS" AND THE 940 gets a new lease of life ,in for MOT on saturday so keep your fingers crossed.

Cheers Lex

Les, don't always suspect a cracked or warped head. You might pull the oil drain plug to see what's up. Remember that oil floats on water. You will get water out of the drain if there is any in there. Also with it sitting 4 months, any condensation could have been pumped up to the top (from the bottom of the oil pan) to begin with when you tried to crank it. Pulling the top of the engine off would be the last thing I would do. These aren't like the old red engines....the cams come off with the head, then you have to have a tool (or make one) to hold or readjust the cams to where they're suppose to be as well as pulling evenly on the "cover" as you take it off or else you can warp it in the process. Looks like you'll have your hands full. Anyway, good luck to you!

I think you will need to pull the head, Hopefully it is just a head gasket. I'm guessing that is the problem. When you said the radiator burst ,that tells me the engine compression is getting into the cooling system. Most likely place for that to happen is from a head gasket
