00 v70XC Hard start or no start. Dies above1100 RPM

Post by aivar »

My Volvo is in trouble. It started with rough starting few weeks ago. Got it running after 3 start cold or hot. Noticed that it did not run in high RPM or died soon after sudden increases. Showed codes P1171 and P0422. There seems to be a slight oil leak in the turbo area if engine has been accelerated. Front O2 sensor has been renewed in recent months.
Changed spark plugs, air filter. Drove a little and things got worse. Took more cranks to start and died out easier. Changed MAF. Drove a little but got worse. Changed fuel filter and then engine cranked and did not run at all except few rare shots. I could hear the fuel pump humming for few seconds when cranked.
Changed fuel pump relay and got the engine back running but still hard to start. It runs smoothly in low RPM with occasional hiccup. It takes at least 3 cranks even with warm engine to get it running in low RPMs.(1000) Sometimes I can get it up to 4000 for few seconds but then it will die. Currently has no trouble codes.
Any advice is appreciated.

Check fuel pressure. Your list of symptoms fits failing fuel pumps for 98-2000 XC70s. I would imagine your fuel pump is noisy for the few seconds it runs when you first turn on ignition without starting engine

Check your normal stuff like spark, etc. Then do a compression test to make sure you don't have a burnt valve.

Can the engine run somehow with a failing fuel pump?

I guess so but it would likely have multiple misfires. Have you checked fuel pressure?

Engine runs fairly smooth but only in low RPM like 1000 with rare hiccups. There are no misfires. I do not know how to test the fuel pressure. Only thing I can think is to take the line off the filter while it is running. But that sounds messy and dangerous.
Any suggestions?

I took the fuel line off the filter while ignition on ,there seems to be a good gas pressure. When I took the ETM fuse off with ignition on, I could hear the the sound for 6 sec.
Meanwhile I have taken the ETM and the hoses off, cleaned it and put it back. I found it very dirty with oil. Seems that motoroil was over filled but that is normal now.
Problems are still there. Start was not easier, it takes 10 sec of starting before the engine takes off and I have to push the gas pedal repeatedly on and off fast to get it going. I drove it for about 10 min but no codes or warnings. It took 5 min to warm up as it is still warm outside. Engine is very slow to respond but will eventually drive somehow. Engine does not run well and seems to choke when accelerated.

Any advice is appreciated!

You need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail up on the engine. You can sacrifice a cheap tire pressure gauge to make this measurement
