swirl valve actuator lever is broken - not the potentiometer end but the inboard end that operates the valve. I bought an arm but it won't fit on the lever. I have been told that it's a £400 fix

Any way of attaching the arm to the broken lever please. Why make this plastic instead of metal for goodness sake. My friendly dealer has set the valve midway and it seems to do the trick - but it's not right is it!

I'm also completely puzzled.
"55 plate" is meaningless to me. What is production date on the door facing label? What engine is in the car?
I believe you are talking about the throttle that some D5's use.
A picture would be great.

55 plate means it was registered for the first time after September of 2005 but before march 2006.
We would likely consider it a MY 2005 but OP should clarify year and or build date

Swirl valve is in the intake runner before the intake valve ( 1 per runner). Remember the early 850's had them in the US I think .
Ford calls it IMRC ( Intake manifold Runner control)
He has a diesel so please see attachments
See PDF directly below for best explanation
