2000 V40 ECT Sensor Code

Post by MadeInJapan »

So on our 2000 V40 The temperature went up and I instructed My son's girlfriend to pull over and stop the car. Lucky for us the car did not overheat. I went to the auto parts store and bought the necessary parts. She waited until I got there. So I swapped out the ECT sensor and thermostat. Sure enough when I checked the codes the ECT sensor code was on. I reset it and everything was fine for several days. Then she called me on the way to work saying the check engine light was on. I ran out with my code reader and sure enough the ECT sensor code came up again. I was stumped but reset it and everything seemed fine. She drove the car for several more days and then call me again saying the check engine light was on again. I told her to just drive it unless the temperature gauge went up. I check the code when she got home and sure enough it was the ECT again! This code rears its ugly head occasionally. I am stumped because I have changed the thermostat and the sensor. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on? Once the car is warmed up the temperature gauge sits right in the middle with no fluctuation.

Sounds like a clear codes issue. I think You have to clear the codes or they will come back.

I had the same thing happen on our v40 until I changed the ECT with a Volvo one- the Autozone one kept throwing codes.

I replaced mine last year and several days later my temperature gauge kept reading hot and my fan kept coming on. I looked at the sensor and it had came loose. You may have to retighten it, since I did that I have not had a problem.
