Ambient temperature gage

Ambient temperature gage, Okay so I'm wondering how to use this tool, it seems not to show the real outside Temp, as it changes a lot while driving. Where is the temp senser loc? Can I move it to where it's picking up the real air Temp?

What sort of vehicle is it.

Should we assume it is an 850?

Yes this would be a 850 Volvo

Edited to tone things down....we try not to shout or be otherwise abrasive on this forum. All caps or red lettering is taken as such by most of us.

The temp gauge sender is located on the left rear of the front bumper. The temperature gauge will change as the outside temperature changes but one problem with this unit is that, when you are stationary, the sensor picks up some heat from the engine and can give a spurious reading.

As to moving it - I don't know where you could put it so that it does not pick up some heat from the engine.

It would seem to me that moving it could be done, a lot of newer cars have the outside temp shown, where are those placed? Mine is always wrong while driving, wouldn't it be better away from heat, maybe under the car, near a wheel?

I agree the location is rather stupid but I don't know how much slack is in the cable to suggest a new location.

My other Volvos were not equipped with an outside temp guage so I tend to ignore this one as I can usually tell if it is cold out there.

Check to see that it hasn't fallen out of the air dam and is dangling. I have seen that when they are not properly seated they can send drastically different temp. signals than the real temp outside.

I always get the radio weather report as I drive to work in the morning. When they say what temperature it is, I always check mine in my car...I'm usually within 2 degrees from what's being reported on the radio.

Perhaps danas200 should read the 'Before you post' advice posted by Made in Japan.

I'm also a bit surprised Made in Japan didn't pick up on danas200 aggresive response to a perfectly legitimate query (reponse in bold red lettering).

Mine's always within 1 degree F of the radio guy or the banks I drive past.

The reason this sensor is on the bumper is because it's a safety option by Volvo. It has the sole purpose of measuring the temperature of the pavement to warn you of the possibility of freezing conditions.

It's not a luxury option like on a Chrysler mini van. Those are probably mounted on top of the vehicle or something, since their purpose is to tell the driver the outdoor temperature along with the compass to let you know what direction you're going.

Volvo use to have this ambient temperature warning on the Canadian model 240s.. I never had it on any of mine in the past.

You're right...been very busy up until this morning...to be honest, it flew right by me....will try to be on top of things more.... Maybe I'll go and "edit" the post and tone down the red...now, to come to think of it, it is annoying.
