Your nose is your friend with fuel and brake leaks. I have two new drivers in the house, and they all have had to smell coolant, brake and fuel to know when the car has to be stopped. Tres importante

The problem with smell is that the hood has a seal near the firewall. This limits the chances of those odors coming into the cabin. Which happened the other day while I WAS driving with a fuel leak. Could not smell the fuel until I got OUT of the car. :(

Any of many times my car was leaking something under the hood it came right on through the air vents (at a stop). Same with a Camry.

Oil has a flash point. If it sprayed onto a very hot exhaust, say one that was at 1400+ deg from a turbo boosting hard up a long hill or something...a slow fire would be entirely possible.

Up front the engine is mostly cool though. Aerosolized fuel could ignite with an electrical spark I suppose, but anything else would have happened at the back of the engine on these cars.

I saw another car fire this morning on the way to work. This is the third car fire I've seen this year. In this case there was no accident involved. Car fires aren't really all that rare what with Gas, oil etc all over the place. I don't know what kind of car was burned this morning, it burned to the ground.

I looked at the burnt wagon in the junk yard yesterday and the upper tranny line was not connected to the radiator. I still think the fire started in the battery area on that one which is close.

yea i thought so. like i said, mine popped off on a 1/2 mile round trip, and the atf that hit any part of the engine block started to smoke. if i had been going home and not the store, the motor would be 30 miles @65mph hotter...
