Awesome - glad to hear everything worked out well for you!akgyger wrote:Hello!
First post here at MVS, and I just wanted to say a major THANK YOU to Justin for this writeup. I performed the PCV job over the weekend in about 5 hours using OEM parts. Was able to get to the 12mm bolts from up above, did not remove coolant hoses, fan shroud, and i found that this service had been performed in a half-assed manner in the past, using URO hoses. The oil ports were clogged, the original box was still on the car, and the PTC was completely clogged. Also, I was fortunate enough not to drop manifold bolts during re-installation.
When I finally got the car back together, I was very happy that everything fired up, ran perfectly fine, and I no longer have a smoking dipstick. No check engine lights, blown off hoses, and no reason to go back in and re-do any of my work so far after 100 miles post-service. I would also like to thank CN90 for the 5/8 ID PTC hose (for lack of the actual part name) idea, I implemented it as well!
I used to be a huge advocate over on the brickboard when I owned an '86 245DL wagon (with a 302 swap!) Now that I'm the proud owner of a V70 ten years later, I feel that MVS is THE BEST site dedicated to repair and information of our beloved bricks.
Thanks everyone.

I have a 2006 XC90 2.5T. Is there a trick to removing the lower left flame box 10mm bolt? I can't get a wrench or socket in there. Doesn't look possible unless you remove the alternator/power-steering/etc including the accessory rail bracket that mounts to the engine block.

I just did the nitrile glove tie wrapped over the oil filler opening. when I increased the RPM on the motor, the glove sucks into the opening and when it was idling the glove kind of pulsed a little then just lay there not doing either blowing out or sucking in.
I put some drywall tape around the cap and after only an hour or so of driving, it has oil on on it.
I put a balloon over the dipstick and nothing happened at all, it smokes a little, but I had just returned from a brief trip, the engine was well warmed up, so its no surprise to me that smoke is coming out of there, that oil is really hot.
I'll get a new gasket or a new filler cap and see if that helps to resolve things.

If it's a turbo, clean the PTC nipple and make sure the vacuum line to intake manifold is intact. If it's a non-turbo, clean the flame trap and make sure the vacuum hose is intact. Either, put a new oil cap seal on it - these wear out often. Otherwise, your system sounds pretty good.iceracer wrote:I just did the nitrile glove tie wrapped over the oil filler opening. when I increased the RPM on the motor, the glove sucks into the opening and when it was idling the glove kind of pulsed a little then just lay there not doing either blowing out or sucking in.

With the flame trap disc itself, the little disc with all the holes in it, located inside the flame trap casing: throw it away.
