I have a 2004 volvo s60 with the 2.4 base engine, 101271 miles. I bought the car in 2005 with 12,000 miles on it.
I recently have had starting issues when the car sits overnight. I have to crank and crank the engine for extended period of time before it starts. I found that if I push halfway down on gas pedal it will start quicker but still takes extended cranking. There is a strong odor of fuel before it starts. Once the car is started it appears to run fine with good acceleration.
I have had it in at the dealer twice and they get no codes, the fuel pressure is fine and they have not had any problem starting it.
The timing belt was changed about 4 months ago at 97,000 miles with no problems until about 4 weeks ago. I have not changed the fuel filter because Volvo said it doesn't have one. There are no fuel leaks and usually no fuel smell until I crank the engine over for an extended period. When I turn the key on, I can hear the fuel pump initially.
I did notice that when I turn the key to start the vehicle, the gas gauge will go over to the correct position and then will drop back to the empty mark, then back to the correct fuel indication level while I am cranking the engine.
Has anyone run into this problem or do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.

Problem returned. Have starting issues once about every 3-4 weeks. Wife parked the car at work for about 6 hours. Temperture was 34 degrees and it would crank over but not start. When it finally started, the engine would not accelerate for about 10 minutes, then it started working normal. No codes. Any idea what to look at next? Are there any sensors that would affect the starting such as the fuel rail sensor, coolant, throttle position sensor, and etc? Did have the fuel rail sensor replaced 5 years ago under recall.

You can take measurements at the coolant temp sensor to find out its resistance at cold. These often fail and cause hard starting and over-rich mixtures causing a fuel smell.

Continuing saga of intemittent start.
I found that when I initially turned on the key without cranking that I had 10 lb of fuel pressure, a 2nd time I got 22 lbs of pressure and a 3rd time, I would get up to 42 lbs of pressure as needed. Most of the time the car would start but I had to keep the engine revved up for a minute or two, then it would run fine. Once it is warmed up I have had no issues until it sits for about 4-8 hours. Still when it takes a notion to not start, I have to crank the engine and press halfway down on the gas for a minute or so until it starts. It acts kind of like a flooded engine or when the choke on a carberator was not functioning correctly. Still no codes showing up.
As in the past posts, I changed out the fuel pump which also has the reulator and fuel filter built in and changed the fuel pump relay. I just changed the injectors, still having the same issue though the fuel pressure comes up in two cycles of the switch on/off Once startedI have a solid 58 lbs of pressure.. Could the camshaft postion sensor have any affect on the itnial amount of fuel being delivered to the engine on the initial turn of the key? Does anyone have a thought at what I should look at next?
Thank you, BMT
