86 740ti M46 struggle to put in first gear

Post by turboman86 »

H i, what a great bunch of folks on this site !
Gradually my transmission(M46) is giving me a fight to get into 1st gear but only when it gets warm. Sometimes if I play with it, the thing will drop right in. I have had 6 or 7 of these cars but never had this happen before. Is it a syncro problem? I changed fluid and clutch is still in fair shape. i adjusted the reverse lock out plate and replaced shifter bushing and it falls into gear until it gets warmed up. Also a lot of grinding getting it in to reverse. Anybody had this sort of thing happen to their M46????

If you turn the engine off when this is happening and rev and 1st engage with no effort then you have an incomplete disengage of clutch.
Have you bled clutch?
When you take off, how far from floor is the point where car will begin to creep on flat ground?

I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT MY GOOD MAN ! I will let you know because I am pulling the tranny to find out what is causing it to happen before it wears something else out. Thank you for your thoughts. It is hard to
find something you cant see and it takes time to think it all out. The clutch is grabbing inches from the floor like it normally should and no slipping.

I have 180,000 on this clutch it is due for a replacement anyway right? It would shift the same hot or cold if it were a syncro problem. I am going to agree with you and put a clutch in first and then if it still does it then I have to open it up and look inside. I don't want to have to pull the gearbox more times than I have to but................... I will let you know !!!
