cooling fan not stopping, coolant sensor code,

A few weeks ago my check engine light came on. I finally stopped at a local parts place and they checked the code, I beleive it as PO116 coolant temp sensor. They shut if off and it hasn't come back on in a week. Last night my wife said something was running in the garage. Luckily the car started this morning as the fan must not have shut off, at least it did not after she drove to work today. What parts might I be looking at? New Sensor, Shut off switch/relay, Thermostat?

the coolant temp sensor is bad. the fan will shut off but it takes about 5 minutes. i think its designed as a built in fail safe. you will need to remove the thermostat housing and might as well install a new thermostat while your at it. you can get the parts from fcpgroton.com or eeuroparts.com . you must reset the code after you install the new sensor if it doesn't reset itself otherwise the fan will continue to run.

PLEASE replace your thermostat, that was the entire issue with mine, i bought the 60$ sensor from volvo for no reason, this ended up being a goose chase for me, the inner t-stat housing torx head was on so tight that it broke my tool when i tried to remove it. i finally got the t stat replaced the car now heats up very nicely especially in some of the cold weather we have had lately.

Are you sure it was the cooling fan running? Mine shuts off when the ignition is turned off. However, my wife's 850 had a problem where the air pump kept running, just like you described, which is located next to the cooling fan and sounds like the fan. It turned out to be the relay for the air pump.

In this case it's the temp sensor. While you're at it, replace the thermostat too. Your problems will be solved.
