Just attached a tow-bar (trailer hitch in US). This presented no problem till I got to the electrical stage. The tow-bar came with a wiring harness from an S40 and the plugs don't match! I found a four pin female connector behind the lights at the back left pillar of the car which I believe is for linking the trailer wiring. The four wires are black, brown, yellow and yellow with red stripe. This I have replaced with a standard crimp on 4 wire female connector. There is also an uncut loop of 3 wires in the same area which are possibly related (red, blue, and purple with white stripe). The harness wires are connected to a plug on the tow-bar according to the Australian standard large 7-pin wiring code.
Then I put temporary spade connectors on the wires that I need for left turn indicator (yellow), right turn indicator (green), stop light (red) and tail light (brown). The white earth return wire was connected to earth on the vehicle body. Test time and no combination gave good results with indicators. The tail light when connected to the yellow/red wire is on with or without ignition. The stop light works as it should!.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a V40? (VIN YV1VW17K91F670274 if it helps)
Thanks
Dave

This isn't a wiring diagram for your particular Volvo but it could possibly help with your wiring questions.
