2006 XC90 T5 DEM and AOC pump issues

I had the "Anti-spin service" message for months consistently. It always came on during the initial check shortly after ignition. I purchased a VIDA tool and read the following codes: BCM-0095 and DEM-0006. The first code usually means a dead DEM module and the second a bad pump. According to VIDA, the current to the pump was basically nil (9mA) and there was no pump pressure. Voltage to the DEM was good (14V) and all fuses were fine. I surmised that the DEM unit was bad and perhaps this was the problem not the pump, since it wasn't getting current.

I lucked out and found a used DEM unit for $200 from an identical car and model year, which many have said might work. I swapped it out and on the first startups no Anti-skid service message! I hooked up VIDA and I still had the BCM-0095 code, but the pump was working and I had AWD. I drove around and had VIDA hooked up. It showed the pump pulling around 2100mA and 0.9mPa of pressure. I thought all was good and perhaps just the BCM-0095 had to be cleared.

Well...I restarted after clearing the codes and the dreaded "Anti-skid service" message reappeared. The BCM code wouldn't clear and VIDA showed a DEM-006 code with the same values as before for the pump (9mA and 0mPa). I don't know what to think.

Is it a software issue due to a swapped out DEM? Is it not the DEM at all, and maybe a bad pump perhaps pulling too much current and frying out? Maybe even a REM issue? Any help would really be appreciated.

you have almost dead pump.
When you start the car DEM tries to get necessary pressure and runs the pump. But it consumes more power than DEM can provide so DEM module restarts.(it is not completely short because fuse is ok) That takes some time and BCM module can detect that DEM is not communicating. After restart DEM does not reuse pump and stays online.
What is software version of your DEM?

Thanks for the quick reply, doublebug! I went to the car with VIDA to try and read the software version. Never did this before but figured it was in the software tab. Played around a little and clicked something that scared me to death (send prog). The dash suddenly went black and the car would not start. I pulled the ECU fuse and reset the car by holding the battery leads together and that did the trick. I had an urgent SRS warning message and also noticed got code BCM-E003 Control Module Incorrect Software (a yellow light fault). These all cleared, though, except the BCM-0095 and DEM-0006.

I am kind of scared to play with the software function again, but if you let me know how to access the version I can try. Sorry for my inexperience.

OK I think I found the software version in VIDA under Diagnostics-->Network. There are two software numbers listed: "0030735738 AC" and "0030646470 A". Note that this is the reading from the replacement DEM I took from a wrecked car that might have sat in the junkyard for some time (not the original DEM that may actually be functional). I am not sure if the software resides in the DEM module itself or centrally in the system.

"0030735738 AC" that CAN configuration version
"0030646470 A" that is software version

0031219723 AA is the latest version I've seen.

so you version is definitely out dated.

can't say. It's better to ask dealer

I can only suppose that behavior with dead pump will change.
But with new pump you don't need it

BTW. If you have right DICE hardware I can try to update your DEMs software remotely.
First I will backup original firmware to be able to restore it. I already did that for the DIM module.

I am intrigued by your offer, but am unsure how something like this would work. I have a cloned DICE unit that is not running the newest firmware (though I could update it). PM me if you prefer.
