Any suggestions on where to source new engines? I found a couple places on google. would a 2000 V70R engine fit in the 1999?

Yes I do believe it will fit fine, if your car is a T5.

Yes, for sure a 2000R engine will work in a 1999R.

You can make a newer engine work too with minimal tweaks, that is what a lot of people are doing now, but I do not know the details. Check out Volvospeed.com if you want to look into that.

you could get a junk yard motor and have that head machined. as long as the valves are good you can do the replacement yourself. so you dont really need a new motor.

I would check compression on the rest of the motor. If the numbers are good, I'd replace the head. Also have that injector checked.

I also like replacing the head if the bottom checks out - because you can replace all of the valve stem seals (and the rest of the top end seals) when you do it. If you put a head in there with 15 year old seals, you are rolling the dice ...

If you find a good motor cheap, go that route. I found a good motor for under $200 once. You can't beat that.

Also, check with your local head shop. Some are real expensive with rebuilding the head. You may find it cheaper buying a refurbished head. Keep your finger crossed if you get a new head, I spoke with a guy recently that received a BAD new head.

Apparently Omaha not the best place to get an engine rebuilt, much less a Volvo. One guy quoted me $3000 to rebuild the head and everything. No thanks.

Still looking at different options but have to speak to this dealership who gave me the bad oil change. I'd at least like them to take it in but I'm worried they'll come up with some reason why it wasn't their fault only after they've pulled the head and charged me $500. Supposedly they have a good reputation but I don't really trust dealers anyways.

they always will shift the blame. but honestly, how do you figure a bad oil change caused this? you said they only put 5 quarts in, thats all it takes. 5.1 if you wanna be technical. in order to fix this as cheaply as possible, you need to remove the g=head yourself and bring that to a machine shop for work. they will replace the guide seals and bad valves. its up to you to do the cam seals and valve cover seal. there is no way you are getting through this spending less than $600. i wouldnt just throw in a "good" used motor either. cause if you think about it, if the "new" motor runs it doesnt mean something wont go wrong. yours was running just fine until then as well. so you are rolling the dice on a used motor. if you find a used motor just pull the head and check it out, cause thats all you need.
