2004 XC90 Rear Differential fell off/ smashed

Hi, I am desperately after some advice please. We took our XC90 in for an MOT today as my husband waited. When the manager drove the car back to reception he got out and handed my husband the keys and pass certificate. They walked out to the car when my husband pointed out a lump of metal on the ground just behind our car. On looking at it, it had volvo written on it so he said it must be from our car as they haven't had any other volvo's in recently. He took the car back to inspect and said it was the rear differential casing that had broken off. He suggested we find a second hand one and bring it back for them to fit. As the car is unsafe to drive we have left it there. Has anyone heard of a rear differential case just falling off, there was no oil leak or humming sound which I've read are typical symptoms. It was a large bit if casing and looks like it has been whacked with a hammer or something. We have photos of the part if this helps. I understand from volvo this is unlikely to have just happened but not impossible and they have quoted a couple of thousand just for parts. They also said if it happened in their garage they should repair it, (if not general wear and tear), as did citizens advice. We need to find support that this isn't just wear and tear essentially - if it isn't? We don't have a clue but feel it unlikely and would be grateful for ANY advice.

Fishy like maybe they dropped the car?

Have an independent mechanic come inspect the car in-situ.
