As mentioned in a previous post I am a newbie to Volvo's and car repair in general. Recently purchased a 1997 850 GLT with approx 125k. About 250 miles after purchase it began to blow large amounts of whitesh-blue smoke out of the exhaust. Turns out the turbo is bad. On removal (by me) there was oil on both the compressor and tubine side and oil in the air inlet and outlet hose. When put I on jack stands about a 12" oil puddle dripped out of what appeared to be the lower intercooler. Total miles driven since I noticed exhaust smoke is about 20 miles. My question is in doing the turbo replacement is there anything that is recommended to be replaced our checked due to the oil leakage. Any advice on this, and turbo replacment in general, would be appreciated.

If you're going to go to all that trouble, while your changing out the turbo, change out your PCV hoses, clean the PCV nipple on the lower end of the air intake hose and change out your oil separator (also part of the PcV system) under your intake manifold and its related hoses.

Thanks for the suggestions MIJ. I will check the PCV nipple on the air inlet hose. The oil trap and hoses were just replaced about 270 miles ago. Would it be possible that the oil leaking into the compressor side of the turbo would cause the trap to plug again?

rbrach - Per the suggestion in the "Had Problems with your 850 or 70's Turbo" poll I went to Majestic Turbochargers in Irving, TX. The URL given for their website does not work. Phone is 800-297-3626. I talked to Mike, he was most helpful. I also tried FCP Groton but they did not have the unit I needed.

Usually not the oil leaking from the compressor side that causes the nipple to seal up. Just normal exhaust condensing where hose diameters become smaller (like the nipple) causes clogging after awhile. It's something that should be checked about every 50k miles or so anyway.
