1997 850 Air bag (SRS) OBD unit in engine compartment

Post by Yellowstone Savage »

I am unable to locate the SRS on board diagnostic controller in the engine compartment. I need to view/reset trouble codes after driving without the passenger airbag connected. The air bag service manual shows it in front of the computer units on the right side of the engine compartment.

You will need a copy of VOL-FCR and a VAG-COM cable to do this on a 1997.

It's done through the OBD-II connector under the coin holder. Those OBD-I diagnostic units stopped in 95.

Thanks! So much for the easy solution. I see now I have a 1995 service manual. Sounds like a trip to a local Volvo shop is in the cards.

Hrm. A copy of VOL-FCR ($200) and the VAG-COM cable ($15) is probably cheaper than the dealer. A local indy *MIGHT* be able to do it, if they still have the old-school non-computer scanner, which is kind of rare.

This is the only part about the 96-98 cars that's more of a PITA rather than less. Too late for OBD-I blinkenlights diagnostics, and too early for VIDA compatibility.

FCR can be found in some places if you know where to look.

Arrgh, you got any Rum?

The VAG-COM Cable can be had from numerous vendors on eBay in the price range Matty suggested. The port has to emulate Com 1 for VOL-FCR to work.
