Damn. That is a GORGEOUS automobile.
Is it going through oil, blowing gray smoke out the tailpipe? It should be, if the rings are bad.
Also, let's start adding donor scope to the thread. A T5 block and head is identical except the ECU, right? Should mate right up? How about a complete engine from an XC, if a T5 couldn't be found? What years?

I agree, it is gorgeous! Super bummed about it.
I think it's leaking a bit of oil but haven't noticed any smoke at all. I'm done messing with it so hoping someone will come pick it up soon.
Drove it about 20 miles today and it got around pretty good but new owner will want to clear things up.

Do you know if it's the original engine? Numbers match?
If so, it's useful to try and determine whether the engine can be rebuilt or needs to be replaced. When it gets old enough for classic cars night at the local burger king, it'll be worth more with the original block.
Can anyone think of ways he can test for that? A borescope sure would be handy.
Also, would anyone expect damage from driving it around on 4 cylinders? I'd foresee maybe shorter life on the motormounts, but that should be about all?

Mechanic said there was 100% piston leak and his recommendation was that I replace the engine. Would probably have to pull it to really understand the problem (unless you do the borescope thing which I have no idea how to do.)
I could do the 4 cylinders thing but I have 2 small kids and just don't feel comfortable driving them around in it with issues so better to let new owner sort it out. Plus I've got a 1995 Land Cruiser with 160k on it so I really need something more reliable at this point.
Have a guy locally who has a totaled T5 with a good engine who drove it today and may try to drop his engine in it. I told him I thought labor would run 2-2.5k but that was kind of a ballpark guess.
