Re: sudden ETS warning and limp after extreme cold
Don't place a non Bosch MAF in a Volvo unless you'd like it to fail around 6-12 months later. There are some real good ones out there such as Cardone which I believe is rebuilt but stay away from the rest.

I've emailed the company I ordered from and requested to change my order for the Bosch part.
Additionally, I've found the following paperwork. I'm 2nd owner of the car.
I see that the original owner had a couple of relevant services, but I don't completely understand the invoices:
8/22/05: 89506 miles
check engine light: found air flow sensor operating out of specs. Replaced Mass Air Flow sensor. 1.5 units labor. Part number 8670263-6
3/30/07 97080 miles
LABOR AND PARTS:
J#1 50V0Z Recall / campaign Units .30 labor
Customer request perform open campaign 155 ETM sowtrawre update S25045. Completed
note: recommended 4 tires, at wear bars. Upper engine mount torn, recommend coolant flush, dure for timing belt and tensioner and 90K service. Provided customer with estimate.
PARTS:
JOB #1: qty 1: FP-Number 30785451-3 ETM/ECM P Upgrade. Job 1 total labor and parts: WARRANTY
Could this mean that the ETM was replaced under warranty?
As a side note, He did the timing belt and tensioner at 98K. I bought the car at 126 and the engine mount was the first thing I did, followed by coolant flush and radiator replacement, transmission flush.
Car currently has 133K.

Post 2006 there was updated software which masked the failure rate of the ETM enough so Volvo needed to replace less of them in the field. The updated software decreased the likelihood of the car going into limp home mode.
If yours has a yellow sticker it has been replaced however white stickered ones are original and generally made between 99 and 02 and coincide more or less with the build date of the car.

Hello!
I received the BOSCH MAF and finally had a chance to replace it today. To summarize: The car had very sudden lurching and stalling and crazy RPMs and ETS light. Folks here helped me to diagnose an MAF by disconnecting it. For about 20 seconds the RPMs went up and down and then settled just under 1. Re-hooked up and it bounced and rev'd up and down.
Today with the new one installed (yes! we did it ourselves
thanks to a very detailed photo tutorial on the site!) It didn't change the behavior. Still OK with MAF unplugged, still bad with it attached.
Additionally we tried plugging it in after it had started unhooked and stabilized but it too provoked a "fit" and stalled.
Time to take it to the mechanic? Should I have cleared to codes in order for it to run smoothly with the new MAF?
By the way, the old MAF didn't appear grungy or damaged to the naked eye.
Thanks in advance for any further advice!

For what it's worth: The mechanic (Euro-car specialist shop) said it was the turbo hose thing was separated and dented from whatever it is supposed to be connected to. He guessed that my 17 yr old was out driving it roughly. No confession yet from said 17 year old. I have a perfectly good MAF, don't know they take returns. If not, I'll put it on the "for sale" page. Thanks again!
