Droning noise

Post by dugitman »

94 850NT 5spd 220K

Wife noticed a subtle droning noise at end of her commute yesterday. She thought it was coming from rear wheels. I drove it last night and noticed the droning after a bit of driving. It was hard to tell where it was coming from. Took it out a second time a little later and nothing. I drove it to work today. in reverse it started at end of driveway and continued for a block or so on the road. It was much louder and sounds like it is coming from passenger front. definitely wheel related. It stopped once i got up to 15-20mph and did not return for the 15 mile commute to office. It sounds like something rubbing but does not seem dependent on directional change. Best imitation of the 'drone' is the first note of a mourning dove call, but continuous. Last night it seemed to stop briefly upon hitting bumps and then return. Brand new tie-rods, rockers, shocks, struts last summer. Would a bearing unit make this noise? i thought that would be a higher pitched sound.

if so, my next question would be...can i live with this noise until i get brakes replaced next summer? doesn't seem dangerous.

sorry for the stream of consciousness posting where i answer my own questions.

If it's not speed-related, and loosely RPM-related, it might be this:

I have the moan on very cold days. This is a little different and is motion related(not rpm). I can't pin it on any speed however. It was doing it quietly at high speeds the first night after car warmed up. This morning at low speed but stopped at stop sign. Then went away completely after getting to 20mph. i'll post again if any more info on the drive home.

I get a moaning, droning noise from the passenger seat sometimes, I just ignore it and hope it goes away, funny thing is it's not there when I'm in the car by myself !!!

Lucky for me, I hear the sounds of NPR or my iPod! :D

For the original poster, I'd say you have a caliper "slightly" stuck. Get your brakes checked.

I did a post (can't find it now though) a while ago re the same type of noise from the rear n/s (RHD) brake on my car espec in reverse, turned out to be a buildup of brake dust jamming against the drum because the previous owner had the handbrake drum adjusted up way too much, pulled both sides cleaned out the dust (heaps of it there was too) and adjusted the handbrake to spec. solved the problem.
