2003 S80T6 How to measure ACTUAL oil pressure?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2003 S80T6 How to measure ACTUAL oil pressure?

Post by epukerob »

So... it appears the 2 reman'ed replacement turbos are bypassing oil, but are luckily under warranty. So... I need to provide an ACTUAL OIL PRESSURE measurement in order to process the warranty claim - has anyone ever done this? How to "tap in" to the system and install a gage?? Any thoughts/photos/procedure available??

The oil pressure switch is on the front of block just above the oil pan seam almost under end of starter. It is a metric thread that uses a seal (not tapered pipe thread). I think it is 10mm 1.5 thread but it has been a while since I did an oil pressure measurement on a white engine. You could get an oil pressure switch and break it open and then drill and tap it for 1/8 NPT which is the standard oil pressure gauge for measuring loads of other domestic and some import cars. Or you need an oil pressure gauge that has adapters for European cars.

I wonder if they would accept a video of an oil flow test out of a disconnected turbo supply pipe. That is a much better true test of the turbo oil supply that protects turbo from failing. That would require a smartphone or video camera and a can to catch oil in.

Hey Jimmy 57 - thanks very much for yours! Do you think that sensor is accessible from underneath, with the underbody panel removed? I found this kit from an on-line search: Equus/Oil #9843 pressure adapter kit for European vehicles. Includes an M10-1.0 x 1/8-27 FNPT adapter. Kit is about 9-bucks.

Once again, I have answered my own question... For the benefit of others, here's what to do - you can access the oil sending unit from the top side. Remove both of the ducts to and from the intercooler - removing the ductwork between I/C and throttle body reveals the sensor and connector. Removing the air inlet duct and air box also helps clear the way. The sensor itself requires a 24mm deep socket; a 15/16 deep is also an exact fit. The thread is M14x1.5. The Equus kit mentioned above has this adapter. Any ol'e pressure gage is then fittable to the 1/8-27 FNPT port.

It is normal.
I have checked several and the cold oil pressure always shocks me.
Run it for a few minutes and it will drop to mid 20's idling.
