Hello,
I drive a 245 wagon with manual transmission 4 speed with electronic overdrive... M46 i think?
My knowledge of the 240 increases every day, but try to be patient with my ignorance if possible. I started noticing that at initial take off, (((lifting my foot from the clutch and pushing throttle))) is becoming very difficult to do without causing the car to buck and jerk as if i was learning to use a manual all over again. I can take off with out it happening but i have to give very little gas and not fully release the clutch before switching to second. this cant be healthy as I'm essentially riding the clutch through all of 1st gear???
Im thinking it has something to do with the cable our throw arm or mabey the transmission mounts? i dont really know. it only gives me trouble when my clutch peddle reaches the very end of release.
a little shake is apparent at the end of release in second gear also.
any ideas would be of assistance!
if i was unclear please ask me to give info you need.
thanks fellow brick lovers!!!

Have you adjusted the cable? Where does the Clutch begin to engage? Low, middle or top during release?
Blessings,

How many miles are on the clutch?
It could be either oil or some other contaminant on the clutch disc, or the clutch lining may be getting thin.
Either way, you may be needing a new clutch soon.

sorry i am responding just now, I have not had time to even consider fixing this. the clutch begins to engage about middle height. it doesn't seem to fully engage until the very top when the pedal is fully released.

Could be a wearing clutch that you might work around by tightening the cable, at least for awhile.
I'd be more suspicious of the transmission mount, though. If you try to launch hard, is there a bang? If so, that would be your transmission hip-checking the underside. My 1981 used to do it wicked.

it started in middle December and it was sudden! not gradual. i would say that trying to launch hard causes a few bangs... the shifter also has always shaken excessively when i go into gear hard.
I should add that i was stranded in Denver a few days before i noticed this ever being a problem. it was the coolant line going from engine into firewall. it was very cold and with limited time i decided the easiest way to replace it was take the whole intake manifold off. i did not have enough time to replace the gasket but im certain now that the intake gasket is shot so im in the process of replacing it today and hopefully tmrw when the part gets in. i noticed that the is water getting into the oil and im thinking that it could be because of that and its messing with oil pressure and vacuum pressure as well. perhaps once everything is restored the engine wont surge as much.

i just looked under the car and noticed transmission fluid seems to be leaking from where the overdrive solenoid is connected as well as the little pan under the overdrive and also it seems to be leaking from speedometer cable input as well. i will try topping off the oil... ATF type-F right?

In a stick? No. I'm not sure what it is, but it isn't ATF.
My 81 shook at the stick too, until I did the mounts.

SO, I replaced the intake gasket, topped off the trans fluid, checked the solenoid connections, replaced the spark plugs, wires, and dis. cap (just in case) and still a bucking just at the very end of clutch pedal release. I looked at trans mount and it could use replacing so I'm going to try that next.
