'13 Volvo Loud start up

Post by fields 100 »

Hi,
Does anyone know what controls the starter and turns it off after the engine fires up? I think in my case there is some sort of delay which makes start up occasionally with a roaring sound. With a keyed ignition
it would probably be sticky starter relay, ignition lock, etc,but with a keyless ignition I am clueless.Any ideas?

I think this is how it works: When you turn the key (key-less in your case) beyond the "regular" Position II you energize the Solenoid and Starter. Once you let off the key the Solenoid returns and Starter stops turning. You may have a situation where the Solenoid is not de-engerized or it is being held/sticky (?) by the flywheel and taken for ride and then released. The "Loud" start up could be the Starter spinning much faster beyond its designed when it rides at the speed of the engine before being released. If you have a reduction gear starter it will be even louder if taken by the flywheel for a ride. Just my guess as it could be a entirely different kind of "Loud".

On a '13 S60 you push a button and release it and the starter runs until the ECM signal for RPM satisfies the RPM target programmed into CEM. Then the CEM switches off the starter relay power and the starter stops.
It needs to be checked to see that the engine does gain speed as normal or that would cause the starter to delay going off.
Does it do this on first cold starts of the day or only after it has been run and shut off for a normal or close to normal operating temp start?

Never on cold.Usually, with a warm engine,15 to 30 minutes after shut off.If the engine cools down completely (that is when it starts with 1200rpm) it would never happened. But with a warm engine, when it still starts with 700 RPM, it would.
