I recently bought my 1998 Volvo AWD wagon. This is my first time on this website which it has been really helpful already! I have about three main problems with it right this moment. I have no idea what I'm doing because this is my first Volvo.
1. The person I bought the Vo from, said that the turbo seal was broken and so the turbo does not work. How do I fix that? I may or may not be leaking oil from there. I've been driving around all this time without turbo and it's been rough.
2. I took the air filter out of the box under the hood and looked at it, and it was FILTHY. I don't know which one to order? I know that will be an easy fix, I really don't know what filter to order for my car though.
3. The last problem is with what I think is the transmission but again I have no idea what I'm talking about or doing so I'm going to describe it. I start my car up and it won't get up and go. I try to accelerate and it won't go above 1500 RPM without going downhill. Also it will not go above maybe 20 miles an hour. I let it warm up, but still won't shift up. How do i fix that? What is wrong with it?
On a side note ever since I bought the car, It would make an angry grinding/whirring noise if I pushed the gas pedal too hard. I try my best to avoid pushing it too hard and making that noise, but it does happen sometimes. Please help!

The turbo is part of the air intake system on your car. It can't NOT be used, there is no on/off switch. If the turbo isn't spinning, the car will run like an absolute dog…. and it sounds like it is.
No such thing as a discrete "turbo seal," sounds like the previous owner was being vague or didn't know what they were talking about. The turbo CONTAINS seals, but they're mainly just to seal oil in. The turbo needs to be checked to see if the wheels spin freely, then check all of the piping to and from the turbo for cracks/air leaks.
The air filter is the same filter used on every 93-97 Volvo 850 and 98-00 Volvo S70 and V70. Extremely common.
There may be nothing wrong with your transmission, it sounds like the engine has a handful of faults that need to be addressed before it can make any reliable power.
The car's check engine light is illuminated, right??

Sounds like you Volvo needs some serious help ASAP. The issue with the car not revving is more then likely connecting to the issue with the turbo. You need to get that turbo looked at ASAP because if it was the seals, it would still be working and burning a lot of oil.
As for the air filter, you can find that here.

No, the check engine light is not on, the coolant light is on though. but the coolant is fine and the car does not over heat.
