2001 S60 T5 - Loss of heat- driver's side

Post by Erupert66 »

I was driving home the other day and suddenly, I started getting cool air from the upper vents. After checking at home, it appears that heat is still coming out of the passenger side but not the driver's side.

Recent history -

Installed an aftermarket head unit with the dash kit from crutchfield about 1 week ago. installed the mic on top of the steering column and fished it down under the dash and over to the center console without removing panels. . Of course, this implies that the climate control unit was out of the console. I've checked and re-checked these connections but I am thinking that, if the car is dual-zone climate control, there has to be a remote air temp sensor for each of the driver and passenger compartment, not just the cabin sensor in the middle. Right? I cannot find anything on the web with a schematic on how the system works and where the sensors are located.

Temp is and has been dead in the middle of the gauge - normal, coolant is at max.

Any help appreciated.

Get to someone who has a Vida/DICE set up . When mine did that the seat heater control module had a short in it that effected the climate control to have full ac on one side and full heat on drivers side.

The tech at dealership plugged it in and stopped me before I could leave as they plugged in a new seat heater computer and it was fixed. I would have spent a long time diagnosing without the Volvo computer.

If you want to know what was most likely for that car /year/model ask member Jimmy57 very very nicely. He has a tremendous wealth of knowledge on these matters.

I'm sure he will also tell you to have the Volvo specific code read to find out exactly what it is though.

Thanks! I'll check at the local shop, the dealership went under but it stayed as a service facility. To read codes, do they have to pay Volvo or just when doing firmware?

Also, my seats are working (in fact that's what is keeping me warm to drive it), I assume yours was out?

My seats were working fine . I never would have looked there. They can read the code without needing Volvo. They only need Volvo when they have to download new software.

Went to volvo today (2x). First trip, the heat worked perfect. VIDA turned up nothing, damper motors didn't respond to a calibration attempt. Left, drove about a half-hour and went back to cold. Drove back. Still no codes. Cranking heat full on both passenger and driver resulted in temp of 140 on passenger and 100 on driver. Since it's intermittent, they are thinking damper motor. Since I just put in the new head unit, I am going to pull it out and see if I can see any connections to them and check them. For now, going to manual and cranking my side to max temp makes good heat.

So, what I did today was crawl into the footwell and inspect the linkage ( nothing binding ) and so I unplugged and re-plugged the connector to the damper motor. Worked on a short trip. I'll update again in about a week or so.

Strange, battery died and didn't want to take a charge. Swapped it with the one in my 325i and now the climate system seems back to normal. Saw a post about disconnecting the battery before unplugging climate unit during radio replacement. I didn't do that. Maybe that messed with something?

Yes. Low battery does effect the car badly. Also by removing the battery you may have wiped the memory and the issues is now resolved or will pop up again soon as the system finishes checking for issues.
