2006 volvo s40 none starter

I have a 2006 volvo s40 1.6, recently i have had problems with starting the car when i turn the key all the lights (including headlights) come as normal but there is absolutely nothing from the engine , I have to do the key turning several times before it eventually starts. I have swapped keys so it isnt a key problem. It is gradually getting worse ie it may take 8 -10 turns of the key before it starts the engine!

any ideas??
