1994 Volvo 850 Tune up/Performance

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

1994 Volvo 850 Tune up/Performance

Post by mmd94 »

So im looking for performance parts/suggestions for my 1994 Volvo 850, 2.4 Non-Turbo. I thought about adding cold air intake, performance exhaust (maybe a Cat-back system) and better brakes. As im new to this, im asking for any help or suggestions so i can do this without turning my engine into a useless peice of metal with wheels, aka, blow the engine..

Here are some specs on my car:
Car: 1994 Volvo 850, 20 valve(dual overhead cams), 2.4 non turbo
Miles: 200,136
Parts: As far as i know all parts that are on there now are original or refurbishes parts. The engine runs great now also.

Its top speed was clocked at 124mph

Hey there,

I was advised to take my car to Stage "0" before I begin to make any modifications. Stage zero basically consists of a serious tune up to your car.

Here is a link: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/what-is-stage-0.html

This is just sound advise as doing this will not only net you better performance but you know your baby will be running properly. Is it sexy? Not as sexy as slotted rotors or coil-overs, but it is the smart thing to do. Once the groundwork is laid you know you will have a solid foundation to build on. Keep us posted on the work!

So my Volvo is almost running, and the tune up will begin, after that I will be going performance, long, expensive, and a pain, but worth it. So as I play around in my spare time, I figured it would be a good idea to plan the performance rebuild of the engine. Im hoping to do a complete rebuild but not sure what I should/should not do to it. Im hoping to get the engine to atleast pull 180MPH as top speed, but regardless my insane dreams, I need to know what I should do. The planning the time and space to do this is "easy" for me, its the rebuild, never done one, and will learn alot, If people could suggest or list items to replace or things to do. I kinda get the replace gaskets, pumps (water and oil), PCV system, clean everything, new belts, and most external items. The Major internal work im not familiar with, heads, crankshaft and bearings, and what else may need done. It will get running first, the the rebuild, so no rush on the help =D.

Thanks in Advance!

Any reason in particular you're going to do all this to an NA setup?

He means "normally aspirated"... not a turbo.

thanks Matthew1, Im doing this because I will probably adding a turbo to the car, Maybe... Regardless of what I do, its something I want to do. Im probably gonna find a turbo car in the junk yard, pull the components i need except for the turbo, and add to my car. But not sure yet.

You'll probably save yourself a lot of time and money by just selling your car and getting a turbo model. It's well worth it if you plan on doing performance modifications.

Its not all about the power and performance, although its a goal...this project is a learning experience, I have considered pulling a turbo engine, and rebuilding it, and adding the components, but the experience that comes from this is what I look forward too. Besides, not sure if im doing turbo or not. Dont plan on drag racing, maybe just drifting =D

could anyone suggest a good sounding muffler. I am slowly working on rebuilding my 1994 Volvo 850. Not sure what sounds good without making it sound like a rice burner or killing someones ears when I start it up. Basically I want a nice rumble to the car but not loud. any other suggestions are welcome. I have the entire exhaust off and I plan on replacing with stainless steel...Maybe.
