2004 volvo S80T6 New tensioner broken?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 volvo S80T6 New tensioner broken?

Post by afelix212 »

Hey guys, I just put in a brand new tensioner in my s80, but the belt still walks off center on the cams. It hangs about 7 mm off the cams, and I'm afraid to drive it. The new tensioner makes a cracking noise when I go backwards past the 10 o'clock position, it doesn't tighten up too much when I turn it past the two 0'clock position, the indicator actually snaps back to the left once I pass the two o'clock position. On the old tensioner, it doesn't make any noise going backwards, and I don't recall the indicator snapping back to the left so easily. The tensioner does move when I press down on the belt to check the tension.

Thanks for any ideas

I don't think that tensioner is supposed to move when you push down on the belt. I thought it was a solid mount and not spring loaded or anything. Double check that though because I am basing my experiences from a 2000 year car.

It is supposed to move, what I'm not sure about is the crackling noise it's making. I called the auto parts store I got it from and asked the owner to test one out for me. He said it made no noise when dialed back. The one I took off made no noise either.

I guess they changed the tensioner between 2000 and 2004. On my 2000 its basically and offset cam the pulley sits on that you can spin. Then there's a bolt in the middle to hold it where you set it.

Have you checked to make sure the tensioner and idler pulley are both seating square against the engine block?

Yeah, I just can't get the tension right, not sure what I'm doing wrong. I think I might just need a new belt.
