Re: Shift knob removal
I am replacing it with a leather wrapped knob from a S70. This is my last try to get it off. I had my teenage son give it a go last night. Nothing. We twisted, pulled, cursed, sweat and yelled. After taking the replacement knob off with no effort at all I am at a loss. Mr. Dremel is in the wings standing by. I have looked at the donor car again and see where I can cut with no ill effects. So something is going to give tonight, I so want this to finish the look. I got a cup holder off the same car and repaired it with parts off yet another JY find. The padded arm rest makes a big difference. More to follow.

Its not going to break if you pull too hard!!! So don't worry about breaking it or anything like that!!!

My shift knob has a chunk missing from the top front that you can't even see. But I know it is there. So I just came back from the pick and pull, and could'nt find a wood knob, but brought home two that were in nicer condition than mine for next to nothing.
It's funny, but I had read all these posts before I went there. The first one came off pretty easy. The second was a little harder. I punched myself in the eye. Not too badly but I had to laugh out loud.
I also found an s70 that still had the radio. (obviously no Volvo guys had been there yet) So I figured I could at least move into the 20th century, and have a radio with a CD player. $20. Not bad. I was going to write down the vin# but the owners booklet was still in the car with the registration w/vin# and owners manual, so I'll call the dealership for the code tomorrow. They are pretty nice here and gave me the code for the current radio when I got the car last year.
So it was'nt a bad day.

Used something I saw on this site. Clamped a vise grip at the base and used my newly bought from Carlisle, large curved needle nose pliers, to leverage up. Funny part was I had the Dremel in my lap and was ready to cut it. Had a little panic after I put the new knob on and did not have it all the way down. Shifter got all crazy. Nice firm pressure down and all is good.

Knob now matches my padded armrest with built in cup holder I scored for $2 at the JY.

I've had better luck by releasing the plastic ring that holds the boot up to the shifter knob first. Seems like then you don't have to pull up so hard.

I have a 2005 S60 2.5T with the same problem. I have read several places about taking the shifter knob off. I am seeing different answers. Can someone please give me some clarification? Are there tabs you have to depress or something like that? Do you have to pull the leather down first? Or does it just pull straight off? I need to get this fixed by tomorrow morning. If possible, pictures would be very appreciated. Thanks.
