2004 XC90 2.5T AWD Front Brake Pads Replacement

Post by RunFast53 »

Hello Guys,

I read the post for replacing brake pads but there was not enough information so I hope someone can help me out.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT FRONT BRAKE PADS TO USE:
- I read here that there are 2 different rotor sizes: 316 and 336 mm.
- I also read that Volvo will tell you if you give them your VIN.

"Volvo of Tempe" (Arizona)
- They told me that there are 4 possible options that are based upon the diameter of the Rim that fits over the caliper, as follows: 15", 16", 17" and 17.5 inches.
- They said they get calls from 3rd-party maintenance shops like Firestone, Sears, etc. call them with my question every day.
- They clearly do not want you to DIY or loose business to 3rd party shops.

I also learned on this forum that Akebono pads are excellent ceramic pads that work great, minimize dust and last a long time. I also read that the rotors will not wear down as quickly compared to OEM pads.

QUESTION ABOUT "RIDGE ON ROTORS:
- I have a 1/16" to 1/8" Ridge on my smooth rotors (at the ID and OD part of the rotors) that should be turned yet I am hurting financially so I would like to know if I should just buy OEM thinking that they will drop into the "slot", for lack of a better word.
- Replacing the pads with Akebono pads will "require" that I turn the rotors, correct?

Thank you for your help!

I think what you need to know is overall rotor diameter. The pads will coincide with that. The smallest diameter rotor will have 1 set of pads, and the 2 larger diameter rotors will use the same set of pads.

As far as the rotors go, I would recommend finding the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor in millimeters and measure your actual thickness. if it's very close or under, you would do well to replace them.
