98 v70xc rear windows wont go up with master switch
My Volvo is doing something really weird that I have never seen. the rear windows will go down with the master switch but wont go back up unless you reach back and do it with the door that has the window down. any ideas or what I could do to fix it would be awesome

You need a new master switch, a VERY common failure.

No, you don't need new window switch.
Look for the thread that shows you how to remove the master switch.
Then open it and clean the contacts.
I posted some photos in there...

This thread shows you how to pry the switch out:

Replace window switches on volvo s70 v70
This post shows you exactly how to clean it:

The RR switch (within the Master Switch) can get water when you drive with window down, rain etc. gets to the lowest point, which is the RR switch within the Master Switch...

Not all switches can just be cleaned.
It's definitely the place to start, but that
doesn't mean he won't need a new one.

The first time I cleaned it it did not help even though the plug to the rear window motor was unplugged. I know this because after testing the motor and found it to be good (window would go up and down) the Master Switch still couldn't move it up after it goes down. Took it apart a second time and still nothing. Saw a discussion here I think and motivated me to clean it a 3rd time. It has been good for about 3 months now, although the OP may just need a new Switch. Have nothing to lose in cleaning it even if you break it... well do be careful and patient.
Blessings,
BKM

I ran into an issue when I bought mine that took a little more than cleaning.
One of the contacts was touching, but wasn't making. A slight tweak to the
spring leaf got me a few more years of service, but I've since replaced it with
fresh OEM when it got funky again. No problems for some time since installing
the new one. That was about 5 years ago.

This problem was how I found matthews site. We tote dogs around in the wagon and I blame them for the excessive dirt in the switches. The switch design is elegant but it seems to direct the dirt right where you don't want it. I clean these every so often but I am tempted to replace the pricey switch but would like to alter the switch to prevent this from happening, any ideas?
