Just did some work in the car at the weekend. Shifted the car into L while taking the ashtray out with the engine off, finished off put it back into P. When I came to start the car the tell tale warning light came on blinking at me. Drove up the road no probs. Tried shifting into low see if that would clear the problem, no joy, but on shifting back into drive the gearbox stayed in L. Stopped turned off and back on, put back in drive and was still in L. Shifting into R made a huge thump. Stopped and got out. Got back in later drove about 50 miles no problems. Got back in again turned engine on light went off car fine.

Got back in it this morning after doing about 150 miles into and out of London yesterday with no warning lights and put it into drive to find it was in L. Turned off and back on drive engaged no worries.

Any suggestions.

this morning the check engine light came on and the winter mode shift arrow came one and started blinking. the car would move with full power in reverse, but would only crawl in forward. after reading this forum, i went back and gave it a couple of more tries. eventually the car moved forward normally even though all the trouble lights stayed on. i drove car to my friendly volvo dealer where they replaced the pnp switch ($140 usd for the part and $332 usd for labor for a total with tax of $508 usd). seems to work ok now.

:D back with answers. Pnp switch (according to codes). approx. $80 bucks at local auto zone or internet retailers. labour time 2 1/2 hrs. $100 canadian. $180 all together. (sounds like some are paying high for this service). Also, want to take the time to say Thank you to Mathew's volvo site. It's remarkeble to see someone taking the time to help others...should be more of that going on...in my opinion!

Volvo for life....
