1991 240 sedan Brake lights not coming on

Post by kwaykuul »

I have a '91 240. My right side brake light wasn't coming on(glowing) when brake is depressed but the light worked ok. I took out the bulb and noticed that one of the filaments was torn so i replaced the bulb. However after replacing it all three brake lights dont come on when brake is depressed. I saw some sparkles when replacing the bulb so i replacd the fuse but still nothing. The middle light doesnt come on at all but the pair come on just dont light up when brake is depressed. Any clues?[/b]

To clarify the above - I understand that the tail lights work but the brake lights don't. As the tail lights are OK you obviously have lost the 12v feed to the brake lights or all of your bulbs have blown simultaneously, highly unlikely.

Suggest that you re-check the fuse, which I think is #7 for that year. If the fuse is OK then check that you are getting 12v at the bulb holder, using either a voltmeter or a test light. If there is no 12v on the brake light circuit check the switch at the rear of the brake pedal for a loose connection.

Thanks a lot Bill. I actually changed the fuse but now only the left brake light comes on(both tail lights still working as before). The middle brake light and right side brake light sill not coming on. The right side was the initial problem but now i dont know why he's gotten the middle one involved too and i am at a loss since the fuse is ok. step 2? Also, whiles you are at it, could you give me a brief outline of exactly how the fuses work with their various devices. Mucho Gracias!By the way I am coming to london on thursday. I might send you some true californian bud!!!

Check the two brake lights that are not working with known good bulbs - the right hand side is easy to check as you can put the bulb in from the left hand side. The middle brake light you could use a reverse light bulb, assuming they are OK.

Check out this for fuses: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/wfc2.htm
