In a previous post I was seeking advise on restoring the alarm system that was gutted before my purchase. I gave up on that after replacing a missing Alarm Module that didn't seem to do anything except replaced a rigged up ground wire which was necessary to start the car. This wire also caused a NO Crank situation for almost 2 years because it was loose. Today my son discovered that the door switch on the driver's side does move the locks up and down intermittently. The drivers side door lock switch is dead however.
Do these car suffer from any type of sticking door lock actuator syndrome? Three door locks work intermittently but not in concert with the passenger rear not working at all. You'll always hear the noise of the actuators but no chance of telling which one(s) will move either up or down.
Blessings,
BKM

Yes. Inside each motor contained within each latch is a protection resistor. The resistor fails and then very little current goes to the brushes in the motor.
I repaired mine by taking every latch apart and removing the roughly 7 mm x 10mm x 1 mm PTC resistor and replacing it with a jumper I fashioned from copper wire flattened with a hammer and cut to length.
The protective resistor is used as a back up to prevent the possibility of fire if the control system sticks. The control system with the VGLA module is protected from too long output to locks already. I have never known of a VGLA failure that continually supplies lock current.
The motor has to have its end cap removed to access the PTC resistor. Once the PTC is removed the locks works with a bit more vigor. I had a 98 XC and its locks still work perfectly 45 K miles and almost 3 years after I worked on the lock motors.

Or just buy a used one for 45-50 bucks and pop it in!

How hard is it to put one of these in? I've seen tutorials for removing them, but not putting them in. I found a good donor car at the junk yard, but couldn't get the damned part out.

I removed all four from an XC70 a couple years ago without any problem. Maybe I was just lucky, but removed all bolts and just worked it out. I am trying to remember if there was anything special about getting them out. A learning curve on the first one and the rest were better. I think it had to drop down and out through the panel hole. Removing the bolts/screws from the lock part on the outside.
Just another thing on my list to remove/replace at some point.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I just finish my CRV's driver side Lock Actuator Motor Assembly so maybe it was preparing me to do all four on this car. Had the Lock Actuator Assembly apart but couldn't find the little DC motor so just bought a new one on eBay for less than $10.50.
Blessings,
BKM

What part is it that would cost that much used? Is there a link to a good Tutorial?JRL wrote:Or just buy a used one for 45-50 bucks and pop it in!

Thanks "erikv11" for the info.erikv11 wrote:

I just replaced the Actuator for my Honda. It is attached to the locking mechanism.

Q: Is the Volvo one piece?
I opened the old Honda Actuator and was going to buy a motor but thought it was better just to replace the whole thing at $10+ dollars. The old Honda motor looks exactly like the Volvo motor "erikv11" linked me to above.
Q: Is this the same motor on eBay?

Hi "jimmy57" how difficult was it to open it up and did you replace the motor also besides the resister with a jumper wire? Thanks.jimmy57 wrote:

Every door lock actuator has a small 12V DC Motor in it.
Mabuchi motor is used in Honda, Toyota lock actuators.
I just did my 2007 Honda Odyssey, you can see the Mabuchi motor here:

BMW also uses the Mabuchi motor:
