2000 V70 SE 160K--
With your good advice, I eliminated the sharp bang on bumps. Thanks. I replaced the strut's spring seat and bumper stop. While I was at it, I did the inner and outer tie rods, control arm with ball joint and sway bar link. But...
I'm still getting a mystery rattle on the right side. I checked the work (without disassembly) and found I can spin the strut shaft by hand. The left side, which needs work too, will not turn by hand. What did I miss? Strut mount bearing plate? I can't think of anything else.
Thanks for your help.

If you replace the spring seats, you should have replaced the mounts as well.
There is a chance that you have a bad strut as well.

Robert, I'm afraid you're right. Looks like I'm pulling the strut again. Guh.
By the way, I love your videos.

So you replaced ONE rubber spring seat on the left, but not the right? Match both sides. New spring seats and bearing plates. You'll thank yourself down the road!
Edit: And don't use URO or cheap aftermarket. Sachs/Boge/Volvo Blue Box only.

Couldn't agree more - the aftermarket stuff is far below spec. Boge/Sachs/Volvo is the way to go (note they're all three the same). Stay as far away as possible from anything that says FEQ. Really poorly made.

Surprisingly, some ScanTech stuff is Volvo OE stuff. Two people split to create Pro Parts Sweden and Scan Tech. They have a lot of stuff they've bought directly from Volvo. You just have to know what!

I did the right side with the help of a friend. We ran out of time to do the left side. Daughter is in college a couple hours away and we are only graced with her presence when she needs to do laundry every couple weeks. Intent is to do left side as soon as she's around again.
I need to purchase the bearing mounts before her next visit.
I bought the Miele kit from FCP: control arms, sway bar links, inner and out tie rods. The Miele stuff had good reviews at FCP. It looked and felt substantial. I'm sure you guys are gonna yell at me, though.
I promise the bearing mounts will be the real ones.
