Please help me find my 4th Volvo...
Looking for a Volvo wagon for my son. Would prefer an older V70 or V70XC. Would also consider a 240, but would prefer 1990-1993 so as to have an airbag. Must have a manual transmission, not interested in a semi-automatic or the good old 4-speed w/overdrive found in so many of the 240s.
Thanx!

The 5 speeds are far less reliable than the 4+OD. They have a 1 st gear brake to squelch gear rattle and use a plastic needle bearing cage inside 1 st gear.
IF you get a 5 speed immediately drain it and out in 10w30 synthetic oil or Redline MTL.

Thanx for the information on the plastic bearing. Have to say though that I have never had a problem with either of my 5-speeds (250K and still going strong on my '91 240 Wagon - knock on wood), but have had the OD go out in the 4-speed w/OD. Speaking of which, I have that 4-speed w/OD transmission sitting in my side yard if anyone wants it. Free to a good home.jimmy57 wrote:The 5 speeds are far less reliable than the 4+OD. The issues with 5 speed RWD M47II trans was usually due to oil changes with ATF. The thrust bearing for 1st gear would gall and heat the gear until the bearing cage failes and failed bearing. That is the issue seen in hot weather climates. If other oils were used then the gearbox failure is nil.

Not as pretty as my Midnight Blue 99 T5 stick but you are probably better looking than I.luvmy544 wrote:Wanted to thank everyone for the help. I found a beautiful Nautic Blue (or Tardis Blue) 1998 V70 with 142K.

My first 850 wagon was Nautic Blue, it's a great color. Enjoy!
