1998 V70 No turbo boost.

Post by lizlabra12 »

My 1998 Volvo seems to be having turbo issues. its very low on power, wont rev past 1500 RPM in park and cant make it past 30MPH. I also noticed that when I rev the engine, the air hose coming out of the inter-cooler, going to the intake manifold, is crushed because of high vacuum. I'm not getting any noises from the turbo, is the turbo seized? The previous owner also claimed the turbo was not working as well.

It's possible, though unlikely, that the turbo is completely seized. If you want to check, there's a clamp at the very bottom on the intake hose - pull that off, then reach in the side and try to spin the turbine with your fingers.

I think it's more likely, however, that you've got a frozen intercooler or that top hose is just bad. Is there a heated area where you can put the car for a few hours?

The symptoms you are describing is what happens to mine when I forget to put a clamp on a hose or the hose from the air pump comes loose. Check all your hoses and clamps. Pay special attention to the one from the intercooler. You may have to pull the shroud above the radiator to take a good look it. Also, check the one underneath, something may have hit it especially if you remove your splash guards like I do.

Thanks for the advice. I was trying to get the shroud off to check that clamp on the top of the intercooler but couldn't get it off. How would I get that shroud piece off?

Sorry, I did have the intake hose off while I was replacing the boost hose and the waist gate hose, I put my hand in and spun the turbine. I can hear the turbo spool but I get no boost on my gauge or feel any. It was 60 degrees here today so I wouldn't think it was frozen. Next week I'm going to try pressurizing the system and see if I can find any leaks, but any advice is help full.

IIRC, I think there are some screws above it and then it will pull directly upwards.

Double-check the one leaving the turbo as well, since you were working in that area.
