2007 XC90 How to Repair Clogged Ventbox? [Vent Box]?
My 2007 Volvo XC90 is making an awful racket. Sounds like the belts or a bearing going bad, but I called the dealer mech and he said "lift your oil dipstick up, and it it quits making that noise, then you've found your problem. Your Ventbox is clogged up." My question: Is there a link, a file, a video, or anyone that can point me in the right direction for repair, replacement, installation of a new one, etc? Can I just clean it, or should it be replaced? What else can be cleaned or should be replaced with it? Best plact to buy replacement parts? The dealer wants $1100 to fix it. Sounds kinda steep. My regular mechanic isn't that familiar with Volvos, and he's researching it. Thanks much! William

The box has to be replaced. There is a regulator valve made onto it that is not sold separately yet to my knowledge. when the regulator fails vacuum is applied to engine crankcase and air (and dust) is drawn by crank seal and other places. The box is held by several screws to cylinder head top. I assume you have 3.2 inline 6 cylinder engine.
Jimmy, thanks for your reply. My mechanic and I were stumped... I had never heard of a "Ventbox" before... and although he has seen "something kinda similar on a BMW I think" before, we don't have a Volvo dealership anywhere near us, and Volvos are kinda rare in these parts. My wife loves it, and to be honest, it hasn't given us any trouble for 107,000 miles until this past week. I think it's got the best sound system on any stock car anywhere. I had a Caddy CTS with Bose speaker system, and the Volvo sounded twice as good as that, so yeah, I like it too. Ref the ventbox, he found one... he went online and figure out what he's got to do, and he's going to replace some of the belts while's he's got it broken down, so I guess I'm good for now. I love working on cars myself, but a "ventbox? I didn't have a clue what the heck that even was man!
