1990 740turbo. Complete electrical failure??

Post by Tsebast »

I found this 1990 740 turbo for sale and bought it... It hadn't run for a few years, however I have been able to get most if the bugs worked out so far.... I love the car and the especially the 4 speed with OD..:)
For some reason after driving the car around town for say 30-45 minutes, suddenly the car will just quit... Total ignition failure...even going down hill with key on and car in gear, it will not fire... Now if I cycle the ignition key to completely off position and then back to on, the engine fires right away and off I go... However often not for more than a couple minutes and it does it again....
Now if I stop the car, let it cool right off and say go and drive it again in an hour or so, it runs perfect for an extended time, but eventually will start acting up again with ignition failure. Anyone out there think they know what may be the problem?? Which electrical component shall I replace first? :(
Not sure if it is relevant, but the car never does it right after I start it, it always happens after she has warmed right up,,,, say 30 or more minutes into a drive. The temp gauge never goes out of range or anything....
Any hell would be awesome
, thanks so much in advance...

And if I can't trouble shoot myself, with help from others, does anyone know a good volvo mechanic in vancouver canada I could use??

When you say it is total failure, do you mean all electrical is off at the time it happens? If so, check the ignition switch. It is behind the key portion. It will have an electrical harness plugged into it. Unplug it after disconnecting the battery and see if the plastic portion of the switch is loose from the metal part. Mine was loose but it could fail internally without coming loose I suppose. The part is available from all auto supply stores as well as IPD.
