Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows about or has done any free/almost free mods to volvos. Some cars have hidden HP that can be unchained by doing mods like unrestricting flow or removing stuff that isn't needed. Any ideas?

That's what I'm talking about. That's a good one. I don't need hot coolant warming up the air that my intercooler just cooled off! I live down south were my intake and throttle body have absolutely no chance of freezing up from cold weather. Thanks for the idea!!!

Although not exactly "free", I just picked up a 160 degree F thermostat. $8 and 32 degrees F cooler operating temp. Maybe it will free up some HP that may be lost through heat soak.

Well, the 160 degree thermostat is installed and temp is running much cooler. Now it's throwing a P0128 code, which is coolant temp too low. I was afraid that this would happen. Now my decision will be to deal with the CEL, erase the code every two days or so, or go back to the factory 192 degree thermostat. It was worth a try. On to the next "test and tune".

You're going to be wasting a lot of fuel and lowering the life of the engine & catalytic converter. And for what, 5 more ponies?
Engines are meant to get to a certain temperature and this is when the computer begins dialling in the optimal 14:1 air/fuel mixture.
Also you have explosions going on causing high localised heat in the combustion chambers, yet the coolant is not at correct temperature. This causes heat stress on the block as temperature variation will always be high during cold months. Your block/head will likely develop premature cracks.
