It sounds like it needs a new slip ring. Ask the rebuilder if they will sell you one, hopefully they will do it for like 5 bucks ...

I know different shops would vary some in what they do to rebuild an alternator but would the brush replacement and new slip ring not be considered part of an "alternator rebuild"? I'm thinking if I've got to pull it out of the car may as well bite the bullet and take it in for the 120 rebuild....

A rebuild consists of either replace the VR or replace just the brushes, replace the slip ring, replace the two bearings if needed, then clean up the whole thing. For 120 they are likely replacing the front and rear bearing too, which is wise.

There are posts on this forum with the part numbers for the bearings, you can get bearings plus brushes plus slip ring for like $30, but when you said $120 for a rebuild I thought "that's not bad I would maybe just go for it."

I agree... I've wasted enough time trying to do it easily and on the cheap so time to bite the bullet and just have the rebuild done. This place has a good reputation and same day service so probably worth the $$. I've actually got the bracket/PSP/Alt unfastened and ready to come out. Just trying to figure out a way to get the coolant hose out of the way without draining the entire system as I don't have a catch pan and would rather not have to drive all the way to the Volvo dealership for OEM coolant. Thinking I might yank the hose and try one of the wife's larger wine stoppers to plug any leak/seepage. Don't tell her ;)

Got it all out no problem without removing the coolant hose. Am dropping it for rebuild this afternoon.
