Did you read the codes? if not try your self its quite simple.
Open hood and you will see two small electronic units to read the DTS codes , near the power steering pump. Unit A has a small wire attached to the cover, which you remove and plug it into the No 2 socket on unit A. Have a paper & pen ready to write the codes ,press the little black button for a sec & the little Red Light will start to blink( like X X- X X-X X X) (this will be 2 quick blinks,2 quick blinks,3 quick blinks, so this will be a code 2-2-3 ) for example a fault code 2-2-3 will be Idle air control valve signal absent or faulty, read all the codes till they repeat them selves at least once, then press the black button for about 7 seconds and let go, the red light will light up, then quickly press the black button for another 7 seconds, this will clear the fault codes, then after that give the black button a quick 1 sec press, and the little red light should flash X-X-X (this will be 1-1-1) the 1-1-1 will be no more faults.. if you need more help/info skype me: kcjau11

Drove the car about 8 blocks and the check engine light came back on the mechanic read it again and said that the same code appeared which was bad crank position sensor drove the car engine is quite transmission shifting fine but their was strange idling and then several warning lights appeared check engine, abs, tracs off, abs, and coolant I was able to drive the car despite the idling that made me feel like the car wanted to stop. Please help single mom of two don't want to be taken by a crafty mechanic.
thanks for any ideas
Oil On top of the engine is from oil filler cap, and also poring down the dipstick is a blocked breather, you need to clean the flame trap with carby cleaner, there is a small plastic plug with small holes in it which needs cleaning, flame trap is just under the carby black tubing about 3-4" dia, on that is a small plug with two tubes which has the plastic plug with holes..

Oil on top of the engine? That can only come from the oil filler cap, that large black thing on top. Make sure it is screwed down tight. You could get enough oil pushed out to short out the spark plugs.
The wiring is crossed? You drove it there, right? The wires are fine. The spark plugs are OK. I wonder what kind of crank position sensor he put in...
BTW, could you put some periods and commas in your next post? It is quite difficult to read without punctuation.

The wire from the crank position sensor is very sensitive to where it is routed. On a car with a distributor cap, if you route the cable too close to the distributor, the electrical signal from the distributor will cancel out the signal from the crank sensor. Try and make sure the cable is routed well as far away from the distributor as you can. I had a similar problem with an 850 and the dealer mechanic diagnosed the crank sensor. I replaced it myself as they wanted 1.5hrs to replace. Did it myself in 10 minutes. Car still misfired (old sensor was actually ok). That was when I found that by routing the cable away from the distributor, it then ran normally. In worst case when running badly the car actually stalled. I had disturbed the cable when I had removed the air-box to work on something else.
Another source could be a worn out ignition switch. When they start to fail they will throw strange warning lights, engine can run badly. Try the first suggestion first, before looking further.
Good luck,
Neil.

I took the car to Volvo thurs. and the crank position sensor was fine. The tech informed me that the wrong spark plugs had been used so those were replaced. Driving home the tracs off and abs error lights reappeared with a strange vibration in the brake pedal. The car returned to driving rough and when I drove less than a mile antifreeze began leaking by the time I returned home the leak did not reoccur. The check engine light has now reappeared with the rough driving and abs, tracs off error lights. Could the abs control module be at fault.

I took the car into the Volvo dealership and I was told that the spark plugs used in the tune up were wrong. I drove less than 5 blocks and as I came to a stop there was a slight vibration in the break peddle and the abs, tracs off error light reappeared by the time I returned home the check engine light came back on. Could the Abs control module be at fault for misfires, weird idling and strange transmission shifting. The following work has been done new battery, tune-up, new brakes. The previous owner wheel bearing hub asm. control arm bushings left front wheel bearing assy. and lower control arm bushings. In addition volvo also checked the crank position sensor that I replaced and said it was good and working fine. Is there any relationship to the crank position sensor error code and the abs control module. None of the diagnostic reading I have had done has displayed a single code in reference to the abs or tracs off error codes. Both the battery and alternator tested within the appropriate range. Other things that I have notice the trip counter, mileage odometer, and radio do not work, and the abs, tracs off light come on and go off.

I'm not a mechanic, but I know a good one locally.
I also own a '97 850 854 T5, and the ABS module was replaced twice by the dealer, in their standard, $1100 manner. When it broke again, I let it pass.
There is a fault with the electrical connections to the board that supposedly is simple to fix with a soldering iron. I was looking for the thread when I ran across your post.
Chase that possibility, rather than all the others, and I think you'll get better results. I'd hope.
